FIFA World Cup brackets 2026: standings, knockouts and the road to MetLife

The fifa world cup brackets for 2026 are unlike anything that came before. Forty-eight teams feed into a 32-team knockout for the first time in tournament history. This page explains how the bracket fills, how the world cup standings are calculated, and what each surviving team has to navigate to reach the final on 19 July.

How the new bracket works

Until 2022, the World Cup bracket was straightforward: 16 group-stage survivors entered a Round of 16 and followed a single-elimination path through to the final. For 2026, the 48-team format necessitated a new round. The 12 group winners advance. The 12 group runners-up advance. Then the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also advance, for 32 sides in total.

From the Round of 32, the world cup bracket reverts to familiar single-elimination format with extra time and penalties when scores are level. The 16 winners go to the Round of 16. Eight go to the quarter-finals. Four to the semi-finals. The two losing semi-finalists meet in Miami on 18 July for third place, while the winners contest the final at MetLife Stadium on 19 July.

The bracket is split into two halves: Round of 32 slots 1A through 8A feed up to one semi-final on 14 July at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, and slots 1B through 8B feed up to the other semi-final on 15 July at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Tracking world cup standings: tiebreakers in order

Each of the 12 groups plays as a four-team round robin: each side plays the other three, three matches per team, three points for a win, one for a draw. World cup standings are settled by these criteria, applied in order:

  1. Total points in all group matches.
  2. Goal difference across all group matches.
  3. Goals scored in all group matches.
  4. Points in head-to-head matches among the tied teams.
  5. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among the tied teams.
  6. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among the tied teams.
  7. Fair-play points based on yellow and red cards across the group stage.
  8. Drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee as the final resort, though this has never been needed.

The new wrinkle for 2026: tracking the third-placed teams across all 12 groups. Once group stage ends, FIFA compiles a single 12-team table of all the third-placed sides and ranks them using the same tiebreakers. The top eight advance to fill specific bracket slots. The other four go home.

Which third-place slots feed which bracket positions?

FIFA assigns the eight third-placed survivors to fixed Round of 32 positions based on which groups they finished third in. The official table works like this — third-placed teams from Groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K and L map to bracket slots through a published lookup table. Once the ranking is decided, the bracket fills automatically with no further drawing required.

If third place is from groups…They feed bracket slot…
A, B, C, D (top 4 ranked from these)R32 positions 1B vs 3C, 1G vs 3H, etc.
E, F (top 2 ranked)Plays winner of Group E or F
G, H, I, J (top 2 ranked)Plays winner of Group K or L
K, L (top 2 ranked)Plays Group A or B winner

The principle is to avoid two teams that already played in the group stage meeting again in the Round of 32 unless mathematically forced. It also protects host nations from drawing a third-placed team from their own confederation.

Group-stage rules of engagement

Each squad carries 26 players (up from 23 historically, matching the Qatar 2022 expansion). Five substitutions are allowed per match, plus a sixth in extra time during the knockouts. Goal-line technology and full VAR are in place. Concussion substitutes are available — a relatively new rule that didn't exist at the 1994 USA tournament.

What the world cup brackets reward

The new format gives more weak sides a path through the group stage — a 1-1-1 record may still advance — but it punishes complacency in the knockouts. To win the world cup brackets in 2026, a side has to win eight matches in 39 days, one more than in any previous format. That's why physical preparation and squad rotation will matter more than ever, and why managers with deeper benches (Spain, France, Argentina) hold a small structural edge.

How the world cup final fits into the bracket

The 2026 world cup final is at MetLife Stadium on Sunday 19 July at 3:00pm Eastern. To get there, the two finalists each play one Round of 32 match, one Round of 16 match, one quarter-final, one semi-final — five knockout matches — on top of their three group games. That's eight matches in 39 days, with no more than five days between knockout fixtures.

The two semi-finals are held in Dallas (14 July, AT&T Stadium) and Atlanta (15 July, Mercedes-Benz Stadium). Whichever finalist comes through the Dallas semi-final gets an extra day's rest before the final compared to the Atlanta side.

Frequently asked questions

How do the fifa world cup brackets work in 2026?
Twelve groups produce 24 advancing teams (top two from each group) plus the eight best third-placed finishers, giving 32 sides for the Round of 32. From there it's straight knockout: Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, with a third-place play-off the day before the final.
How do third-placed teams qualify for the Round of 32?
FIFA ranks all 12 third-placed teams by: (1) points, (2) goal difference, (3) goals scored, (4) head-to-head if level on those, (5) fair play, (6) FIFA ranking. The top eight advance and are placed into specific bracket slots already pre-assigned to third-place finishers from particular groups.
When does the world cup bracket lock in?
The full world cup bracket is set the evening of 27 June 2026, once the final round of group matches and the third-place ranking is calculated. The Round of 32 begins the next day, 28 June.
How are the world cup standings calculated?
Each group runs as a round-robin: three points for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss. Tiebreakers in order are: total points, goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head goals scored, fair-play points, then FIFA Men's World Ranking.
When and where is the world cup final?
The 2026 final is on Sunday 19 July 2026 at 3:00pm Eastern at MetLife Stadium (officially New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament) in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The third-place match is the night before, 18 July, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
